Biography
Dr. Jan E. Patterson has practiced and taught medicine for more than 30 years. She found herself at a painful crossroads 12 years ago when her son died from suicide, and she was diagnosed with cancer. She integrated holistic therapies with conventional ones, and realized how important an integrative approach was in her healing. This led her to train in evidence-based integrative modalities which she implemented in her practice.
She is the lead author of the book, Breath for the Soul: Self-Care Steps to Wellness, a holistic blend of science and storytelling to empower readers to make time for self-care and use breath, movement, nutrition and spirit to enhance their health and wellness.
Dr. Patterson went to medical school in Texas, trained in internal medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and in infectious diseases at Yale University School of Medicine. She earned a Masters in Health Care Management from Harvard School of Public Health. She completed an integrative medicine fellowship at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at University of Arizona. She is board-certified in integrative medicine and infectious diseases and is the inaugural medical director of Integrative Medicine at University Health.
Dr. Patterson is professor of medicine/infectious diseases and associate dean for lifelong learning at UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine.
